Michael Carrick will become Manchester United assistant manager, Jose Mourinho confirms
JOSE MOURINHO says Michael Carrick WILL become his assistant manager at Manchester United.
The Special One’s long-time assistant, Rui Faria, is leaving United — ending a 17-year partnership with the United boss.
Mourinho will not replace him, but instead wait for Carrick to be ready after the ex-England midfielder finished his playing career to join Mourinho’s backroom staff.
Carrick — captain for the day — signed off at Old Trafford by setting up Marcus Rashford’s 34th-minute winner against Watford.
And boss Mourinho said: “I will organise my coaching staff in a way where the assistant manager figure doesn’t exist.
I am going to have assistant coaches, fitness coaches and a structure where we have specialists in different areas connected to performance.
“The particular reason is I think it will be Michael Carrick in the future — when he has his badges.
“Then he can make the bridge between a player to an assistant.
“When Rui is leaving after 17 years, I have nobody in the world of football ready to be my assistant. So I prefer to structure my staff in a way where there is education and improvement.
“And when Michael has the pro licence badges along with the personality, friendship and honesty he has, I think it will be for him.”
After 464 United appearances over 12 years, Carrick, 36, will have an immediate say in finding the midfielder to replace him.
When addressing the crowd after the game, he thanked Mourinho for giving him the chance to work in his set-up.
Carrick said: “I have to thank the manager an awful lot. It is an unbelievable opportunity. I look forward to learning off him, he is one of the very best.
“I am sure he will teach me a few things and we’ll have success in the near future, I’m certain of that.”
